“Into” is a series dedicated to objects, artworks, garments, exhibitions, and all orders of things that we are into — and there really isn’t a lot more to it than that. Today: Writer Madeleine Holth explores her rising interest in soccer uniforms, thanks to the Marine Serre x Nike Soccer Jersey for the Women’s World Cup.
I’ve never felt a sense of belonging in regards to soccer, or any other sport for that matter. I do, however, applaud the die-hard fans of the beautiful game—the ones who defend their team at all costs, sporting their colors and shouting their chants into the ether. The camaraderie of soccer fans is unparalleled within the sports arena, and one of the most integral ways of showing support to a team or a player is by wearing their jersey. In its own expression of camaraderie, the designer Marine Serre has joined forces with Nike to create a soccer jersey for the forthcoming Women’s World Cup on June 7. The jersey marries Nike’s athleticism with Marine Serre’s up-cycled athletic couture. The result: A slime green soccer jersey with a pearly white piquet-style collar and a contrasting Nike swoosh, paralleled with a Marine Serre-inspired emblem on the chest. The look is a fresh reinterpretation of what has become a Marine Serre staple, the crescent moon motif, in the form of a catsuit complete with a Nike swoosh. Giving soccer the luxe treatment harkens back to the casuals of the early ’80s, those British hooligans who wore Sergio Tacchini, Stone Island, and C.P. Company to avoid police and intimidate their “football” rivals. With the Marine Serre collaboration, I can become a modern day casual, taking part in soccer in disguise as a supporter without a team, a sports neophyte without a clue in a jersey without a string emblem. Though I may never come close to the kicked-up turf of a soccer field, I’m a stan nonetheless.
